Windows down, sun-kissed and sandy, you're cruising the Outer Banks looking for relaxation or fun. This island has a laid-back attitude, slower paced but lots of outdoor activities and delicious restaurants. You can catch a view from the top of the tallest lighthouse in the United States, surf, spend time on the beach, fish, hike, horseback ride, kayak and more. Explore Buxton Woods Trail which is walking distance from the lighthouse.
You really don't see many chain restaurants, which is always a plus. A favorite was
Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill where it sits right on the water for a beautiful sunset view and boat watching during the day. The food is a housemade fusion of local and worldly flavors. Their hot crab dip left you wanting to come back for more. Could have licked the plate! She crab soup, yum! Get your hands dirty in some steamed shrimp perfectly seasoned. This visit required I break out my Digestzen essential oil to rub around my belly button as I just felt like I overate. Within 10 minutes I could already tell a difference. I never go anywhere without this because you just never know if you are going to eat something that upsets your stomach or when you are like me and you just can't say no to one more bite thus overeating. Digestzen is one of the top 10 essential oils in the starter kit. Hop on over to
SHOP to learn more. If you are looking for great breakfast place, you may find a line at Orange Blossom Baker as they are famous for their apple uglies, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. You might also be interested in checking out Diamond Shoul restaurant as they have an award winning clam chowder and they have the only sushi bar on the island.
Traveling on a dime? Check out this free museum,
Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. See one of the only three silk naval flags of this type and the only one with the name Monticello. Learn about the history of the Outer Banks and the ferry system. Read about stories of shipwrecks (about 600 wrecks), pirates and Civil War battles. See artifacts from wrecks. Don't forget to grab a picture of the 1854 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Fresnel Lens and read all about the history. Intrigued by sunken ships? Since you are here, you might as well grab a ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible by boat. Yes, it's free too to take your car or walk on.
